Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a diabetes-related retinal vascular disease, which is among the world's most common leading causes of blindness and vision impairment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, about 415 million people suffer from diabetes mellitus. The occurrence of this disease has doubled in the last ten years. About 40-45% of diabetes patients are likely to have diabetic retinopathy (DR). Retinal fundus images are captured during the regular retinal screening of diabetic patients. These retinal images require extensive examination by skilled ophthalmologists, which is time-consuming and costly. Moreover, training a new individual for retinal image-based diagnosis is an extensive process because it requires a large amount of expertise through everyday practice. Studies show that 90% of cases can be avoided by early identification and treatment. Therefore, automated DR detection systems would greatly benefit the early screening and treatment of DR and prevent vision loss caused by it.

Dr. Anas Bilal (Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D degree in Electronic Science and Technology from Beijing University of Technology. Before commencing his doctoral research, he worked as a lecturer in University of Sargodha. He received his M.S. degree in electrical and electronic systems from the University of Lahore, Pakistan, in 2016.He has published 6 SCI and 4 EI research papers in image processing, medical imaging, disease diagnosis and computer vision domain in reputed journals and conferences. He served as a reviewer with several journals including IEEE ACCESS, Artificial Intelligence Review, Journal of Neural Engineering, Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Image & Visualization ,Smart Material and Structures, International Journal of Biomathematics, Journal of Applied Science and Engineering, IGI Global, Advances in Science, Technology and Engineering System Journal, and Progress in Biomedical Engineering .His research interests include medical image analysis, computer vision, machine learning, sentiment analysis, pattern recognition, and signal & image processing. |
